Are AI search citations the new backlinks?
Short answer: no, AI citations are not the new backlinks. The mechanism is different (no PageRank, no graph traversal at answer time). But they are the new currency of brand discovery in 2026, and a lot of the work that earns backlinks also earns citations. The framing matters because optimizing for the wrong thing wastes the budget.
What a backlink actually does
A backlink is a vote inside a graph. Google crawls the web, builds a graph of who links to whom, and uses PageRank (and a few hundred other signals) to decide which pages rank. The link itself is durable - it sits on a page, points at a target, and gets recounted on the next crawl.
Critically, the graph is queried at search time. When a user types "best CRM for SaaS", Google walks the index, weighs the link graph, and returns ranked results. The links are doing work at the moment of the query.
What an AI citation actually is
An AI citation is the model picking a source to back up an answer. Inside Perplexity, that looks like numbered footnotes under each paragraph. Run the prompt "what is the best email tool for cold outreach" in Perplexity and you get a paragraph with citations to G2 listings, Reddit threads, vendor pages, and the occasional listicle. Click through and the source is real, but the model picked it for one query, in one session.
Two things make this different from a backlink:
- No graph traversal at answer time. Inside the LLM, the model is not walking a citation graph the way Google walks the link graph. It is retrieving sources via a separate retrieval layer (sometimes embeddings, sometimes a search API) and synthesizing.
- Citations are per-answer, not per-page. A page can earn 50 backlinks once and have them count for years. A page can be cited by ChatGPT today and ignored tomorrow if the model's retrieval layer changed or the prompt is phrased differently.
So what carries weight inside an LLM?
The honest answer: a mix of training data composition, retrieval quality, and entity recognition. Things we have seen move the needle in scans:
- Strong presence on third-party review sites (G2, Capterra, TrustRadius for B2B SaaS; Reddit for almost everything).
- A Wikipedia entry, when the brand qualifies. Wikipedia is over-represented in most training corpora.
- Clear entity definition. If your brand name is the same as a common phrase ("Apex", "Loop"), models conflate. A clean entity card on the homepage helps.
- Schema markup that names the entity, the founders, and the category. Not magic, but cheap.
- Mentions inside well-cited industry roundups. Not the same as a backlink, because the engine often pulls the brand name without following the link.
Where the two converge
The work that earns backlinks - good content, real expertise, distinctive POV, original data - also earns citations. A widely-linked-to original study tends to get cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, and DeepSeek roughly proportionally. The asset is the same; the mechanism by which it earns visibility differs downstream.
Where the two diverge is in the long tail. A backlink campaign optimizing for domain rating and link quantity does not move the needle on AI citations as cleanly. The engines weight named-entity recognition, source diversity, and topical clustering more than they weight raw link count.
The practical version
Stop asking whether citations are the new backlinks. Ask: what does a buyer-facing prompt return on each engine, who is named, and what sources are cited under that name? That tells you where to invest. Sometimes it is more G2 reviews. Sometimes it is a Wikipedia entry. Sometimes it is exactly what an SEO would have told you - publish a better page on the topic.
The currency is real. The mechanism is new. Treating one as a clone of the other is the mistake.
